Nazi Symbol Appears on New York State Business

  • December 27, 2024

The brick wall on the town’s only department store, Big Lots, was vandalized last week with a swastika.

And though someone tried to cover the spray-painted symbol of hatred of Jews, it remained visible on Thursday. It was finally blackened over on Friday.

“This act of antisemitism is reprehensible and doesn’t reflect the values the citizens of Greenwich hold dear,” Supervisor Jim Nolan said in a written statement. “My thoughts are with the Jewish community.”

Neither the Washington County Sheriff’s Office nor the State Police are investigating the incident.

It is unclear what the store plans. When asked by telephone, a store employee said they were not allowed to talk about it and hung up. The corporate office also did not immediately respond to a phone call and an email about the matter.

On Dec. 19, images of the swastika, widely seen as the symbol of Germany’s Nazi Party under Adolf Hitler, were widely circulated on social media, garnering nearly 200 comments.

The Greenwich swastika is among those that have popped up in the Capital Region including four that were taped atop a Trump/Vance political sign in Duanesburg, leading to the arrest of the chief financial officer of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region. Other incidents over the years include swastika and KKK displays in New York Gaming Commission’s headquarters, swastikas painted on a Schenectady sidewalk and others found painted in the middle of a Saratoga Springs street and its Spring Run trail. A man was arrested in the 2022 Schenectady vandalism, but no one was ever charged in the Saratoga Springs incidents.

The Washington County community has also seen hateful acts. In 2020, a resident’s home with a “Black Lives Matter” sign on display was spray-painted with a racial slur. Though there was video surveillance of the vandal, it is unclear if an arrest was made.
