Missouri Man Taken into Custody After Defacing School with Nazi Imagery

  • March 13, 2025

St. Louis County Police Department announced Thursday that an arrest was made in connection with racist vandalism at two Affton School District schools.

Patrick Sloan (18) of St. Louis likes to paint swastikas at local schools.

Sloan has been charged with two counts of Property Damage Motivated by Discrimination (Second Degree) and is being held on a $25,000 cash-only bond.

Charging documents reveal the suspect to be 18-year-old Patrick Sloan of Affton and say he “knowingly (committed the vandalism) because of the race and/or religion of students and staff members of the school district.”

Sloan is facing two counts of second-degree property damage motivated by discrimination, a Class E felony.

The district confirmed he graduated from the district. A Facebook post from Affton Cougars to College showed Sloan graduated from Affton High School in May 2024.

School staff arrived early Friday at Affton High School to find swastikas; the numbers 88, meaning ‘Heil Hitler’; and the words “WITE POWER” spray-painted on the school’s front wall.

Less than a week later, similar racist language and symbols were found Wednesday morning spray-painted onto Rogers Middle School.

“Let us be clear: There is absolutely no place for hate in Affton School District,” Affton Superintendent Travis Bracht said Wednesday in a message to the school community about the vandalism. “These actions do not define who we are. Our response—standing together in rejection of racism, bigotry, and fear—does.”

The second act of vandalism was caught on surveillance video, and police said the person in the video appeared to match the description of a suspect who stole two cans of black spray paint from a local hardware store on March 6.

St. Louis County police shared the surveillance footage with the public Wednesday and urged anyone who recognized the suspect to come forward. Court documents say a family member of Sloan and multiple witnesses identified him as the suspect shown in the video.

As of Thursday, Sloan was being held on a $25,000 bond.

Bracht sent the following message to families in the district Thursday:

Dear Affton Community,

We want to update you on the investigation into the racially motivated vandalism at Affton High School and Rogers Middle School. Law enforcement has confirmed an arrest in connection with these crimes. The individual in custody is a former Affton student and graduate. They have been charged with two counts of Property Damage Motivated by Discrimination Second Degree.

We are incredibly grateful to the St. Louis County Police Department for their dedication to this investigation. While this development provides some relief, we recognize the deep impact these hateful acts have had on our students, families, team, and community.

The outpouring of support from Affton families, neighbors, and beyond has been overwhelming. From messages of encouragement to countless offers of help, your unwavering commitment to standing against hate has been felt by every student, teacher, and staff member in our schools. This week has been difficult, but it has also reaffirmed what we already knew: Affton is strong, resilient, and united in our values of respect, inclusion, and kindness.

Hate has no home in Affton. This incident does not define us—our response does. Thank you for standing with us. We are, and always will be, #AfftonStrong.
