Connecticut High School Student’s Property Targeted with Nazi Symbol

  • November 19, 2024

A Weston High School student, who is Jewish, was targeted last month when a swastika was etched into their locker, an official said.

Temple Israel Westport Senior Rabbi Michael S. Friedman said that the incident occurred the day before the start of Yom Kippur and the swastika was on the student’s football locker.

“Now a swastika etched on a Jewish student’s locker is different from a swastika drawn, for example, on a bathroom stall or the seat of a school bus (both of which have also happened locally in recent years) because this is a targeted act,” Friedman said.

Friedman said that the victim informed school officials, which prompted an investigation into the matter with the help of local police. He said that ultimately the investigation was inconclusive and a suspect was not identified.

After the incident occurred, Friedman said that a group of students came together to plan a school-wide assembly to discuss the incident. He said he spoke at the assembly along with a Holocaust survivor, and the victim. A message from Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., was also delivered at the event.

“These teen leaders envisioned, shaped, organized, executed and led that schoolwide assembly on Friday morning,” Friedman said. “They demonstrated initiative and leadership throughout the process.”

Friedman called the assembly “an excellent and impactful educational experience” where students were able to speak freely and discuss their concerns. He said students expressed that the incident made them feel targeted and an expert discussed “strategies by which one can oppose hate” to the students.

Friedman said he is hoping that sharing this story will provide positive change and shine light onto “the great faith we should have in the next generation.”
