Connecticut Child Beaten by Classmate Due to Her Jewish Identity

  • November 19, 2024

he Greenwich Police Department on Tuesday announced it is investigating a reported assault between two elementary-aged children that occurred at a local party last week. According to police, the victim said she was assaulted because of her Jewish faith.

The mother of the victim contacted police on Nov. 18 to report the incident, which took place at a party with elementary-aged children at the Arch Street Teen Center in downtown Greenwich on Nov. 15, police said in a news release Tuesday.

A game was played during the party, police said, and one of the children was tagged ‘out.’

“This student became upset with being called ‘out’ and struck the victim in the face,” police said, noting several other children witnessed the incident. “The victim reported that when asked why the student hit her, the other student said it was because of her Jewish faith.”

Police said they are “actively” interviewing witnesses to gather information.

“As we still have several interviews, we cannot provide additional comments at this time. However, please be assured that our department is fully committed to thoroughly investigating this incident,” police added. “We take all reports of crime extremely seriously, particularly those that involve harm to individuals and elements of hate. It is important for the community to know that our commitment to addressing hate crimes remains steadfast.”

Police went on to say they “understand the alarm caused by incidents of this nature and their impact on victims and the broader community.” The department asked for understanding and patience during the ongoing investigation.

Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camillo issued a statement Tuesday afternoon, saying his message aligned with police.

“We have an active investigation, and it also involves minors, so we will release more information as we have it, all according to what the law allows due to the age of the youngsters involved,” Camillo said. “Please know we will continue to aggressively investigate all reports of hate and behavior that is not welcome in Greenwich. Greenwich is our home, and a place where all feel welcome. Let’s also remember that we have so much more in common than anything that separates us.”
