Police are investigating after several Nazi banners were strung from Pittsburgh bridges over the weekend.

The banners, made out of bed sheets, contained “ handwritten Nazi symbols and messages,” said Public Safety spokeswoman Cara Cruz. They were hung overnight Friday into Saturday on the West End Bridge and the 10th Street Bridge.

Ms. Cruz said the banners did not include any “overt, written threat directed toward a specific group or individual.” They were photographed and taken by police as evidence, she said.

No arrests have been made.

The banners appeared a day after a University of Pittsburgh student was attacked off campus in an alleged antisemitic assault.

In that incident, a man told police he was walking near Semple and Ward streets about 2 a.m. Friday when a group of men spotted his Star of David necklace and “hurled insults about Israel.” According to police, the man said he argued back and forth with the group until “at least three of the males began punching and kicking him.”

A bystander ultimately intervened. The man suffered a bruised lip, authorities said. He reported the attack to Pitt police later Friday morning.

The FBI is leading that investigation.
