New York County Lawmakers Targeted with Anti-Jewish Letters from Local Green Party

  • March 21, 2024

Monroe County Legislature has released a statement condemning antisemitism after an unsigned letter received with the Green Party of Monroe County and the Party for Socialism and Liberation Finger Lakes logos embedded.

The letter uses “antisemitic trope and misrepresentations” demanding that Monroe County no longer display the Israeli flag in front of the County Office Building in support of the victims of the incident overseas on October 7.

The letter also states that the October 7 attack was “well earned” and equates the Israel flag with the flag of the Confederacy, claiming that the legislators support apartheid and ethnic cleansing.

The Green Party of Monroe responded Thursday morning, saying they denounced both the letter and the cartoon, explaining that someone who was registered as Green created the letter, but did not have the authority to represent the party.

Also included in the mailing was a cartoon depicting County Executive Adam Bello “drawn so offensively that it can’t be displayed in most public mediums”.

Both groups replied and said that the letter was sent by an individual who does not represent either organization.

County Executive Adam Bello’s response:

It angers me to see the upswing in hate speech targeting Jewish people

and anyone supporting the right of Israel to exist as a nation. Recent social media posts of a

degrading cartoon and a hateful letter of unknown authorship demonstrate a level of

enmity and evil that has no place in our community.

The purpose of these vicious attacks is to target and intimidate those who support Israel. I

refuse to be intimidated, nor will the Monroe County Legislature. We fly the flag of Israel as

a symbol of support for those viciously attacked, murdered and taken hostage on October

7, 2023.

As a community, we welcome all points of view and embrace open discussion with civility

and respect. The letter and cartoon referenced above reflect neither of those things. It is a

race to the bottom by individuals hiding their identity to spread hate, division, and malice. I

join all who condemn these hateful and cowardly acts.

Full Statement from the Green Party of Monroe:

The Green Party of Monroe County denounces the cartoon and letter sent to the Monroe County Executive and members of the County Legislature on March 12, 2024.  Both the cartoon and letter were created by an individual who at the time was registered as a Green, but had no authority to represent the party.  He had incorporated graphics on homemade stationary that implied that his message was sponsored by both the Green Party as well as the local chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL).  Neither group had knowledge of the individual’s intentions beforehand nor does either group approve of his message.

While the Green Party of Monroe County condemns this individual’s actions, we will continue to fight for an end to genocide and an end to the occupation in Palestine.
