UC Merced officials have alerted residents of university-owned housing about a Swastika symbol that burned into the carpet of a study room at the Half Dome residence.

In an email sent to residents seen by YourCentralValley.com, it emphasizes that the act violates the university’s Principles of Community.

The swastika, a symbol widely associated with hate and antisemitism due to its use by Nazi Germany, has historically been linked to acts of intimidation and discrimination.

In the email to residents, UC Merced stated that the symbol had been burned into the carpet “using a scooter or similar device.”

In a follow-up statement to YourCentralValley.com, a university spokesperson said that the college is aware of a vandalism incident that took place on campus within a residence hall.

UC Merced officials say the incident remains under investigation and staff encourage anyone with information to come forward. The university added that its priority remains providing a safe and supportive environment for students, staff, and the community.
