Nicholas Payton, a jazz musician and former professor at Berklee College of Music, has faced serious backlash for spreading antisemitic rhetoric, ultimately leading to his termination. Payton, a Grammy-winning musician, shamefully used his platform to push hateful rhetori c targeting Jews, including claims that Jewish people exaggerate their oppression and manipulate historical narratives for power. In one particularly appalling post, he questioned whether Jews were ever truly oppressed, downplaying centuries of systemic antisemitism and genocide.

Nicholas Payton’s troubling social media history reveals a pattern of inflammatory statements, not isolated incidents. For example, he not only mocked the Holocaust but went further, implying that Jews are using historical trauma to position themselves as victims for personal and political gain. These narratives echo classic antisemitic tropes that have fueled hatred and violence for generations. His comments align disturbingly with conspiracy theories historically used to justify discrimination and marginalization of Jewish communities.

Despite public backlash, Payton doubled down on his comments, refusing to apologize or show any remorse. He even suggested that Jews should not be viewed as a marginalized group, ignoring the alarming rise in antisemitic attacks globally and particularly in the United States. His rhetoric isn’t just offensive – it contributes to a hostile climate for Jewish students and colleagues at Berklee College of Music and beyond.

Berklee College of Music ultimately did the right thing by cutting ties with Payton, but the fact that he held a faculty position while espousing such dangerous views for such an extended period of time highlights the urgent need for institutions like Berklee to take antisemitism as seriously as any other form of hate.
