Orthodox Jewish Man Stabbed Walking to Morning Prayers in New York

An Orthodox Jewish man was stabbed multiple times Wednesday morning as he walked to a synagogue in the Rockland County community of Monsey, according to a report.

The man, identified by a relative as a 29-year-old married teacher and father to four young kids, was attacked shortly before 6 a.m. near the religious center of Mosdos Meharam Brisk Tashnad, according to The Journal News/lohud.com.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was rushed by Hatzolah Ambulance to Westchester Medical Center, where he was undergoing surgery, the news outlet reported.

“I was so shocked, traumatized,” first cousin Mordechai Zwiebel, 15, told the paper, adding, “I don’t feel safe until these guys are caught.”

He said the victim’s children are ages 1 to 9.

Nuti Klein, 16, who attends the local United Talmudical Academy Satmar Yeshiva, said he came upon the bloody scene after leaving a mikvah ritual bath at the synagogue.

“I saw all the blood on the ground and all the emergency vehicles. I am scared maybe someone is going to attack me,” he said.

Rabbi Yisroeal Kahan said the attack on Howard Drive was unprovoked.

“No words were exchanged and they pummeled him to the ground for several minutes,” he told the outlet.

Emergency services worker Israel Altman said the man was about to enter the synagogue at 2 Howard Drive when he was “jumped and beaten and stabbed multiple times.”

He added that surveillance video captured the two attackers driving through the neighborhood before striking.

Michael Ludmir, a neighborhood resident who attends the synagogue, called the stabbing “very scary” and “very rare.”

“I don’t know if they were hanging out in front of the entrance … It could have happened if I was walking with my wife,” he said.

The Anti-Defamation League announced that it is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrests and convictions of those who carried out the vicious attack.

“We are outraged by this terribly violent incident,” Evan Bernstein, the ADL’s regional director, said in a statement.

“This is truly horrifying. A peaceful walk to shul in the early morning hours is how this man started the day and now he in serious condition in a hospital because of this attack. There is absolutely no room in our communities for violence,” he said. “We must come together and stand shoulder to shoulder, not only to condemn this despicable act, but also work as a community to stem the tide of hatred and violence.”

Ramapo police are being assisted by the Rockland County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
