Swastika Found in Long Island Town Hours Prior to the Start of Rosh Hashanah

A swastika was discovered in Copiague just hours before the start of Rosh Hashanah. News 12 obtained a photo of what looks like a swastika drawn on the seat of a bench in the Great South Bay Estates in Copiague.

“We don’t put up with vandalism or antisemitism or anything like that,” says Vincent Murphy, the president of the Great South Bay Estates Homeowners Association.

The bench is located inside a private beach and requires a code to access. There were also other drawings and writing on the bench.

Babylon Town Councilman DuWayne Gregory says he is very concerned and offended by the hate symbol.

“It’s unacceptable, certainly won’t be tolerated, we have an active anti-bias task force,” says Gregory.

Members of the homeowners association say they are not going to allow that symbol to remain on the bench. They say they’re going to cover it up and maybe even remove the bench.

The symbol was immediately covered up by Murphy.
