New Jersey NAACP Leader Fired for Anti-Semitic Posts

The leader of the Passaic NAACP, who was recently hired by the Murphy administration, was fired from his state job Tuesday after a series of anti-Semitic and racist social media posts surfaced.

The Facebook posts by Jeffrey Dye included his calling it “a damn shame” and a “disgrace” that the United States sends billions of dollars in aid to Israel, one of its closest allies, and saying, “Jews At it again divide & conquering us,” according to media reports.

Dye also criticized the improper hiring practices of former Schools Development Authority Chief Executive Officer Lizette Delgado-Polanco, saying she was “hiring all Latino family members and friends and excluding black people.” Delgado-Polanco resigned under pressure earlier this year, and last month the administration fired 27 people she had hired.

That scandal added to questions about Murphy’s hiring practices that first arose when the Department of Education hired former Passaic Councilman Marcellus Jackson, who served prison after admitting to public corruption. That hiring might have gone unnoticed had it not been for Dye. As president of the Passaic chapter of the NAACP, Dye had planned to honor Jackson at an award luncheon

Dye was, like Murphy, supportive of Jackson’s working in state government and regretted that state law barred him from holding state employment.  “Whether it’s a job with the governor, whether it’s a job on a garbage truck, the man deserves to earn a living,” Dye said in an interview last year. “The man made a mistake, just like everyone in life has.”

Dye was hired at the Department of Labor earlier this year at a salary of $56,000, according to payroll records. Dye’s posts were first reported by New Jersey Globe, an online news site run by David Wildstein, who pleaded guilty as a former Port Authority executive to devising the political revenge plot known as Bridgegate.

Politico New Jersey found more posts with anti-Semitic rhetoric. In one, Dye wrote that “the Jewish news media don’t want to show us black news,” and that he believes elections in Passaic are being stolen “with Jewish votes coming from Brooklyn.”

Dye has also praised Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and former Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi and minimized the Holocaust in relation to what black people have suffered, according to Politico. “The black holocaust has been & continues to be the worst of them all even though white media wants to make you think it’s the Jews,” he said, according to the outlet.

Dye did not respond to an email seeking comment but said in a Facebook post under a link to The New York Times’ 1619 project examining slavery on Sunday, “They Tried To Get The Worst Of What I Said & Yes American Has No Business Giving Our Tax Paying Dollars To Israel To Kill Palestinians & Enslave Africans & Using Both For Their Body Parts.”

Assemblyman Gary Schaer, an Orthodox Jew from Passaic, told Politico before Dye was fired that it was “genuinely frightening” for him to be working in the Labor Department.

“What kind of statement are we making to Jews, to Latinos, to whites who are interested in taking advantage of Department of Labor programs and find out they have to interact with someone who hates them because of the color of their skin?” Schaer said.
