Crossed Out Star of David Spray Painted on Ohio YWCA Building

Vandals spray-painted an antisemitic symbol on the city’s YWCA building.  YWCA Executive Director Stacie Weimer said the vandalism was discovered Tuesday morning by a resident.

The graffiti, painted on the north side of the building at 239 E. Market St, depicts the Star of David with a circle and slash through it in bright red paint.

“This goes against everything that we fight for every day with the YWCA and our mission,” Weimer said. Weimer said the agency reported the incident to Alliance Police. She said police told her that other locations in the city were also vandalized.

Several Facebook users on Tuesday posted photos of vandalism on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Viaduct. The graffiti contained obscenities and an antisemitic symbol and phrase.

Alliance Police responded to a call around 10 a.m. Tuesday morning on the bridge, according to an incident report. Officers investigated vandalism in the downtown area. The investigation is pending. According a Facebook post, the YWCA is both “outraged” and “saddened” by the incident.

“This message was in form of vandalism spray painting on our historical building which has stood as a beacon of hope, love, and inclusion in the Alliance Community for 95 years,” the Facebook post states.

The symbol has since been cleaned off the building, according to a Facebook post from the YWCA. Alliance Police could not be reached for comment.

The agency urges anyone with information to contact Alliance Police.
